Adventist Response to the Haiti Disaster

January 15, 2010

By now we have all heard about the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the Caribbean Island country of Haiti on January 12, and the disastrous results which have affected millions of people in one of the poorest countries in the world.

The General Conference and the North American Division are requesting that a "special offering", which is over and above the regularly scheduled offering for this coming Sabbath, be taken for ADRA’s response to the Haiti disaster. In Canada our members would donate to ADRA Canada – HAITI Disaster. In other words the funds raised would flow through the normal church remittance channels to ADRA Canada who will then work with ADRA Haiti in the relief efforts. ADRA Canada has advised us that in order to receive matching funds from the Canadian Government – it is preferable, although not necessary, for members to phone ADRA Canada directly at 888.274.2372 or give online at www.adra.ca. For the same reason unidentified loose cash donations are also not recommended.

Several Adventist churches and schools and of course individual members have been dramatically affected by the loss of family and friends, and as their various church buildings have collapsed in those areas nearest the epicentre of the earthquake. At least one of our Pastors, and many fellow Adventists have died in this tragedy.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada has already taken action with a contribution of $10,000 to ADRA Canada for the Haiti Disaster. Since then the Manitoba-Saskatchewan Conference Administration has followed up with a contribution of $2,000 to ADRA Canada, and other conferences are expected to make their own response. These amounts in reality are not large, but we as members can greatly increase this response over the next few weeks by our individual giving.

Finally we understand that a North American Division wide offering will be planned for the relief of individual Adventists, congregations and organizations such as local churches, schools and offices – to be taken up in our local churches in the coming weeks.

Please check the ADRA Canada Website and the Man-Sask Website often for news.

Thank you to each one who is remembering the Haitian people in their prayers and or considering their own personal response to this tragedy.

Sincerely,

Collin Akre, Executive Secretary

Haiti Earthquake Disaster – Canadian Adventist Response

January 14, 2010

Dear Adventist Members in Manitoba and Saskatchewan,

Without a doubt we have all been impacted, at least emotionally, by the cataclysmic event that shook Haiti yesterday.  Just watching the news of the devastation, suffering, and grief in that country reminds us of the signs Jesus told us would take place before His coming.  Our hearts go out to the people who have lost so much; many have lost family members.

Relief agencies are moving quickly to respond to the needs; among them, ADRA International and ADRA Canada.  An event of such catastrophic magnitude demands greater assistance than the day to day help we ordinarily give.  Today these people not only need our prayers, but they need tangible help as well.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada Administrative Committee voted to assist the efforts with a $10,000 financial donation to ADRA Canada.  Your Manitoba-Saskatchewan Conference Administration has pledged to assist with $2000 – also to ADRA Canada.  Our appeal to you is for every church to consider what it can do as well, and perhaps individuals would find it possible to contribute also.  Altogether we can make a difference.

clip_image002To donate and for news please go the the ADRA Canada Website at www.adra.ca or place a cheque in an offering envelope identifying ADRA Canada and Haiti Response, in one of the next few Sabbaths.  Please watch for News on this Website in the coming days for more details and resources.

Thank you for your service as we assist our brothers and sisters who are in need, even in other countries.

Sincerely,

Ken Wiebe, President

Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada Leads the Canadian Adventist Church Response

Dear Fellow Advent Believer,

The greeting sounds ancient just like the belief. However, we are seeing with increasing frequency the kind of cataclysmic events that destroy the lives and living of hundreds of thousands of people. The earthquake that nearly destroyed the city of Port au Prince is another example of the fact that this earth is waxing old. Jesus is coming soon!

Having said all of that we are mutually faced with some decisions relating to the disaster in Haiti. The fact is that even though the press will go home in a week or two and move on to a “more” compelling issue or story the people of Haiti will suffer on. The disaster will not go away in a week or two. As Seventh-day Adventists living in a privileged land we must act to assist our brothers and sisters in Haiti who are in need. Fundamentally, all of us are being asked, “What will you do to alleviate this suffering of your fellow human beings?”

This week the S.D.A. Church in Canada Administrative Committee voted to assist the efforts of ADRA Canada in Haiti with a financial donation of $10,000. When thinking about this sum of money in terms of what is needed it is pretty minuscule. However, if all of us do the best we can it will make a difference.

I am sending this communication with the specific intent of appealing to every Seventh-day Adventist in this land for your prayers and financial support of the Haitian people. I am asking that this matter become a priority of pastors, and boards and all of our church family across Canada. May God bless you as you contemplate the call that comes to you as a result of this tragedy.

Dan Jackson

President, Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada
